Calf Muscle – The Second Heart of the Body
What is Calf Muscle?
Soleus
Origin & Insertion:
Gastrocnemius:
➪Origin: Femur (medial & lateral condyle)
➪Crosses both knee and ankle joint.
➪Involved in knee flexion এবং plantar flexion.
Soleus :
➪ Origin: Tibia & fibula
➪Deep muscle, only crosses the ankle joint.
➪Mainly responsible for strong plantar flexion.
Function:
Walking, running, jumping
Why Called “Second Heart”?
It acts like a muscle pump — helping venous return → তাই একে “Peripheral Heart” বা Second Heart বলা হয়।
Nerve Supply:
♲︎︎︎ Both gastrocnemius & soleus: Tibial nerve (from sciatic nerve)
Clinical Relevance:
♲︎︎︎ Achilles tendon rupture → difficulty in walking
♲︎︎︎ Calf muscle weakness → poor balance, leg fatigue
♲︎︎︎ Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) prevention এ vital role.
