Paronychia Medication Treatment

Paronychia is an infection of the skin around the nail, which can be either acute or chronic.

1. Acute Paronychia

  • Usually caused by bacterial infection (often Staphylococcus aureus).

Medications:

  • Antibiotics (oral or topical depending on severity)
    • Oral:
      • Dicloxacillin or Cephalexin (effective against Staph and Strep)
      • Clindamycin (if allergic to penicillin)
      • Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole (for MRSA coverage)
    • Topical:
      • Mupirocin ointment or antibiotic creams (for mild cases)
  • Pain relievers: NSAIDs like ibuprofen to reduce pain and inflammation.

Other treatment:

  • Warm soaks (3-4 times daily) to reduce swelling and promote drainage.
  • If abscess forms, incision and drainage by a healthcare professional may be required.

2. Chronic Paronychia

  • Usually caused by fungal infection and irritants.

Medications:

  • Topical antifungal creams:
    • Clotrimazole, Miconazole, or Ketoconazole.
  • Topical corticosteroids:
    • To reduce inflammation.
  • Avoidance: Keep hands dry and avoid irritants.

Important Notes:

  • Seek medical advice for proper diagnosis.
  • Severe or recurrent cases might require culture and targeted antibiotics.
  • Proper nail care and hygiene help prevent recurrence.
